Me in 23

As it is well said, “a picture paints a thousand words” – so I gave myself a picture project. I challenged myself to portray my life through 23 poignant moments of memory from my 23 years on this Earth – though one picture a year was sometimes insufficient. These are significant times that have been captured on camera, and offer a lens of my life, but even I can see the inaccuracy – many of the most significant moments are all-engrosing and they flit by before a camera can be thought of.

These pictures are beacons for all to see in my piecing together of my story – as much as they each contain worlds of memory and thousands of words, the ocean of time between each one is equally expressive and important, bridging the gap between who we were and who we become. Even when my camera is present, the conversations, friendships and family support I have cannot be shown or explained, only felt and treasured.

Here is “A Piece of Me in 23” – or as I came to feel as I made it – “Looking Forward, Looking Back.”

Looking forward, looking back - The picture that inspired both this project and the title. My mom captured my beloved "Crazy Aunty Cath" and me giggling with recognition 23 years ago.
